Two young engineers, just out of college, sit down at a desk to map out their future. They use modern tools to help them find the best location and the hottest niche for launching a new consulting firm.

It happens today, using the Internet, geographic information systems, database mining techniques and more. But these two engineers — Clinton Burns and Robert McDonnell — did it in 1898, with a compass and a map.
